Manchester United legend Gary Neville insists Sir Alex Ferguson's young team will overtake Barcelona inside the next two years.

Neville was part of the United side that overcame Juventus - who they had lost to three out of four times in the previous two seasons - on the way to claiming the 1999 European Cup, and the 36-year-old believes Barcelona will also be caught.

"We had young players who strived to get to their (Juventus') level and eventually you get there," the former Red Devils defender and captain told the Manchester Evening News.

"You climb that mountain and it is tough. But I think we will progress and we will get there.

"I think the likes of Man United and Real Madrid will get past Barcelona in the next two years.

"Next season will be tougher for them because teams like United and others will learn. Things go in cycles."

Manchester United legend Gary Neville feels Paul Scholes could have played on next season.

Scholes hung up his boots after the Champions League final.

Neville told the Manchester Evening News: "He’s gone too early for me because, as a fan, I would like to see him play every single game. He mesmerises me with the way he plays football. So simple and yet so brilliant.

“But for him it is the right time. He is someone who doesn’t like fuss. He is set in his ways and when he makes a decision he will stick to it.

“He didn’t like sitting on the bench but he felt it was the right time for him to retire and that is the most important thing.

“He has got such incredible high standards, and he is tough on himself.

“I’m not sure what is coaching role is going to be but I’m sure he will grow into it and surprise a lot of people.”

Manchester United legend Gary Neville admits he doubted their title chances after the first two months of last season.

Neville hung up his boots in the New Year.

He told the Manchester Evening News: “If you had asked me in October would we win the league I would have replied ‘I’m not sure’. That was not being negative.

"It was based on the way we were playing away from home at that time, the fact we were picking up injuries, we were not consistent, we were conceding goals our play was not of a high standard.

“But then you should always rely on the fact that Manchester United hang in there.

“I remember my last game at West Brom, we were a disaster.

“How we won that match I will never know. But then that is Manchester United.

“It has defined our last 15-20 years, winning when we don’t play well, finding a way to win and then come February and March the team hits form.

“In October Chelsea were double winners and they were six or seven points clear, Arsenal were playing well at that point and you thought this could be tough for us this year. So it was a great championship triumph.”

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans says their preseason tour of the USA will lift everyone's confidence.

The Reds defender believes pre-season tours offer the club’s youngsters a good platform to prove their abilities, with debuts in friendly matches sometimes leading to senior appearances during the subsequent campaign.

Evans told ManUtd.com: “The tour always provides some of the younger players with a chance to impress.

“My brother Corry got the opportunity to go last year, as did a few of the other younger lads, and it gave them a lot of confidence for the new season.”

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was disappointed seeing West Ham United relegated.

Ferdinand spent seven years in total at Upton Park before completing a then record £18million move to Leeds - another club he hopes will return to the top flight in 2012.

"West Ham was the team I grew up in as a kid and to see them relegated out of the Premier League was disappointing," he told MUTV.

"It was always nice to go back and play against them and see old faces and old friends but this is football and things change, things happen.

"My other old team Leeds are in the Championship now as well so times change. I just hope they come back up again next season."

большое интервью Энди Коула:

Manchester United legend Andy Cole believes manager Sir Alex Ferguson will maintain a local core to his team.

Cole believes United can survive the transitional period and before another generation of home-produced players emerges to generate the same family feel the Nevilles, Scholes, Beckham, Butt and Brown brought to the squad.

“With only Ryan Giggs remaining it does feel like the end of an era,” Cole told the Manchester Evening News.

“I grew up with all those lads. I was very new to Old Trafford when they were brought into the side and it was great for me to be around them. They made my transition from new boy to being part of the squad easier.

“They were fantastic characters both on and off the field and I just loved the banter they had. It came from being together at a young age and it was very refreshing.

“They were the fabric of the club. They knew what it was all about – it was ingrained in them and that love for the place was infectious.

“Whenever new players arrived they bought into that togetherness because it was always all around you. The home-produced boys and locals made it a family club and newcomers soon got into that.

“There is no doubt that spine of the squad for so long helped. It is not often so many young players from your own system come through at once so it is going to be tough to replicate.

“But there are still many Manchester lads coming through at the club - maybe not in such a large bunch as we saw in the 90s - but they will always be coming through at United.

“However, in the absence of a whole group of home-produced lads who’ve got the club woven into them, it is up to others who’ve had a number of years at Old Trafford behind them to take over that mantle.

“Players like Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja, Vidic, Patrice Evra and Wayne Rooney know what it is all about. They may not be Mancunians or United Academy products but they’ve experienced everything.

“They know the value of the team spirit the players like Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Nicky Butt brought to the side.

“The manager also knows how vital all that is and I think he has got such a well-oiled machine down at United now that although the make-up and backgrounds of the personnel is changing, the United style and ethos won’t alter. The new group will buy into it all and those still around will ensure that.”

Paul Scholes would have joined boyhood club Oldham had he felt fit enough to continue playing.

"I'm disappointed I never got the chance to play at Boundary Park,"

"I thought I might get the chance to appear in a cup game, but sadly it didn't happen.

"I think people assumed that because I'm an Oldham fan and I'm from Oldham that I would finish my career with them, though there was never any contact.

"If I felt I could have played on, and Oldham was an option, I would definitely have joined them."

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown is delighted with his move to Sunderland.

Brown, 31, managed barely 30 of his 361 appearances for United in the last three Barclays Premier League campaigns with injuries having taken their toll.

That is a statistic he is determined to address after agreeing to move to Wearside.

Asked about his ambitions, he told SAFC TV: "Last season, I was fine, I just didn't get into the team, so it was a little bit frustrating. But that's football and you move on.

"I am just delighted to be here now to help Sunderland push forward.

"Personally, it would be good to be playing every week, trying to help the team win and playing well.

"Club-wise, everyone will be looking to push the club forward and start challenging for those European places - and who knows beyond there?

"That's what teams always aim for at the beginning of the season, and we will be no different.

"But obviously, the squad will be a lot stronger."

Brown admitted that the hunger to be involved week in, week out made his decision to leave United reasonably straightforward, but with several options having been presented to him, Bruce was a major factor.

He said: "He's been great over the last few weeks when I have been talking to him.

"Straight away, I said it would be great if I could join and we could get it all sorted, and we have done and I am here.

"When I was younger, I used to watch Steve and I have known him a little bit as well, so it was fine."

Bruce, who launched his joint bid for the United trio as Jordan Henderson headed for Liverpool, was thrilled to have signed the defender.

He said: "We are delighted to welcome a player of Wes' ability, experience and character to the club.

"He has been a fantastic professional for Manchester United through the years and not only will he strengthen our defensive options, he will also bring with him a winning mentality and level of maturity which can only be positive for the players around him."

Former Manchester United defender John O'Shea is delighted with his move to Sunderland.

The 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international travelled to Wearside for a medical and wasted little time in becoming Steve Bruce's eighth summer signing.

O'Shea said: "Once I'd heard reports about the club and the people here, the ambitions and what the manager was all about, it was the only place I was going to come to."

Manager Steve Bruce, also a former United player, added: "John has been a solid, consistent part of Manchester United's squad for well over a decade, which goes to show the fantastic pedigree of player we have signed.

"He is a wonderful professional both on and off the field and his wealth of experience and versatility will be great attributes for us.

"I'm delighted with the players we have been able to secure ahead of the new season."

с Крисом новый подписали

Defender Chris Smalling has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester United.

The improved contract is recognition of the 21-year-old's outstanding debut season, when he made 34 appearances and far exceeded the expectations of Sir Alex Ferguson following a £7million summer move from Fulham.

It was enough to secure him a first Premier League title medal.

'I am delighted Chris has signed a new contract,' said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. 'Chris has been outstanding since joining us from Fulham last year.

'He is an extremely talented young defender. He is quick, strong and reads the game well. He is a great asset to the team.'

New Manchester United signing Ashley Young could end up being the striker signing Sir Alex Ferguson has been seeking.

The Independent says Young is generally characterised as a replacement for Ryan Giggs and the player whose arrival gives Luis Nani cause to worry for his future. But that's not how Gérard Houllier saw it at Aston Villa. Houllier discerned as soon as arriving at Villa Park last summer that Young operated better behind the main striker.

Asked about Martin O'Neill's perception that Young could potentially be one of the best left-wings in Europe, Houllier replied: "No. He can play on the wing. Whether he can be one of the best in the world in that position... I think he can be one of the best in another position."

Last month Fabio Capello agreed that Young is best deployed centrally, "not left-wing or right wing".

The growing consensus in football is that Young operates best there.

Manchester United winger Nani is sorry to see John O'Shea and Wes Brown move onto Sunderland.

He admits the loyal club servants played an important part in helping him settle in Manchester but fears Brown will not have a second thought about tackling him hard when the two meet in the Premier League.

"I think Wes has had a brilliant career in United," Nani told MUTV. "He was a very important player for United and is a fantastic professional and a good friend.

"He helped the young lads a lot and was always ready to play with the team-mates. He's a very friendly player and was very close to me as well. I enjoyed my time I played with him."

When asked whether the defender will kick him next term, he replied: "100 percent! He kicked me of course in training. This is the way he played and why he's been a fantastic player."

Nani is also sad to see O'Shea leave after the Irishman also completed a move to the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract.

"I've enjoyed playing with a lot of players and these two players were very good for me as well because of the experience they've got," he added. "They helped me a lot as well and I do the parties and go out with them and enjoy the life outside the football.

"They are very good people and I hope they do well and keep doing their best at Sunderland."
