I saw the after game show on the CBC (Hockey Night in Canada - After Hours) just a few weeks ago and they had Eberle on there really promoting him.
He is the fan favourite in Canada for sure.
If you look at the overall schedule Eberle faced in the WHl combined with the toughness and the travel distances of the league - all by bus - you might be surprised at how well he stands up.
Take a look at what Eberle just said about the upcoming marathon trip:
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/Oilers+newbies...
You forget that although the Pats did not make the playoffs Eberle ended up playing lots of games with Team Canada as well as spending the tail ends of two seasons with the Oilers minor affiliate.
Eberle also carried the Pats on his back for the past couple of seasons, something that is expected of him in Edmonton. He is accustomed to the role.
I realize that the NHL is a step up but in many ways he has played two 80 game seasons already before entering the NHL.
There is a lot of weight on his shoulders in Edmonton for sure, but he has been there already with the Canadian junior squad and stepped up in the IIHF championship.
Others might be shining right now like Skinner but they will fade.
The smart money will be bet on Eberle.
Yeah, he is a pure goal scorer. Possesses a very quick and deadly wrist shot. He is also a magician with the puck, making veteran defenders look dumb on some plays, and this is the WHL we are talking about. The WHL is much more of a defensive league than the other 2 where everyone scrores 100 points, and he is almost a goal per game player. Eberle is also pretty good defensively as well.
He has great vision, always knows where his line mates are. Very good passer. His last linemate, Tim Kraus (should be in pro now), who played with Gilbert Brule (CLB) on the giants, said that Eberle is probably more skilled than Brule was at that age.
The knock on him is obviously his size. Kind of smallish at 5'11 170, and the fact he got his first penalty of the last season (21 games without). So it shows that he is a very smart player, but that he also isnt gritty at all. I guess he occasionally throws the odd hit, but not much more. I dont see him standing up for his teammates and getting rough though.
Surprisingly, he is actually pretty hard to knock off the puck, and is very good at stealing the puck from opposing teams.
So really, pure offensive player, great scorer and playmaker, though still competant in both ends. Already one of the smartest players on the ice in the league, but he is not the least bit gritty. Hard to knock off the puck though, that is a plus, but he is in Oilersdom now and everything can happen)
My favorite 2010 Rookie is obviously Jeff Skinner, so i will stand up and praise him =D
Maybe, or maybe not)
A thing about Eberle is he has the "Saskatchewan Roughrider mentaltiy" and so far in his hockey career he has always been playing for his hoime team that he idolized.
He was in Wilcox - a hockey factory just a half hour from his and my home - he played for the Pats - his home town, he played for Team Canada and now he is playing for the Oilers - his favourtie team gowing up and also close to home - Eberle has always played from the heart and like the Saskatchewan Roughriders he is not a quitter and he will keep coming until the final whistle blows.
You would not believe how hard people will play - despite the limitations of size - if they are doing it for something that is near and dear to them like your hometown.

One thing I have learnt though when it comes to greatness in the NHL size does not always matter - heart, determination, natural talent and drive - have often won the day.
Take a look at some of the great players that were smaller and what they achieved:
Bobby Orr
Wayne Gretzky
Joe Sakic
Thereon Fleury - would have been better if not for Graham James
Martin St Louis - Lady Byng Trophy winner
and many others people said would not make it in the league.
It all comes down to heart and how much they want it in my humble opinion.
Hey we might both be fooled and maybe a certain goalie - Michal Neuvirth- could take the Calder. If he can backstop his team to a great year he might prove both of us wrong. So far he has filled in stupendously and saved a certain Russian hotdog (Ovechkin) on more than one outing.
As an inside it is good to hear other opinions and discuss this stuff without taking the gloves off....)))))

I am a big Bruins' fan but I do not see Tyler Seguin in the running he is just too young for it.
I took a better look at Skinner's stats and abilities and I will have to agree that he could be a great one.
Some people might discount him because of his 5 foot 10 inch height.
But he seems to have a lot of smarts both when he has and does not have the puck.
Playing in Carolina might also make him shine in the eyes of hockey writers that in the end will say who deserves the Calder.
What do you think about John Carlson's chances?
About Carlson, i like USHL rookies and think he may be all-situation defender, capable of putting up points as well as playing physical and a strong defensive game))
