„Looking forward to eight days of worldclass table tennis“

Stuttgart. On Sunday morning the official opening ceremony of the 2009 LIEBHERR European Championships in Stuttgart took place in the Porsche-Arena. Until Sunday next week, Europe’s best table tennis players will demonstrate their skills, a second time in Stuttgart after 1992. Günther H. Oettinger, Minister President of Baden-Württemberg, Dr. Wolfgang Schuster, Mayor of the City of Stuttgart, Thomas Weikert, President of the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) and Stefano Bosi, President of the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU), uttered their warm welcome to the spectators, participants und officials and said thank you to the assistants and sponsors of this event. 14-year-old singer Catharina Heller from the “Young Opera” Stuttgart marked a music highlight with the song “Fight to Win”.

„Great Sport with a small ball“

„I expect great sport with a small ball“, said Minister President Oettinger in his opening speech. “I hope”, he added, “that table tennis will become upgraded in Germany and Europe through this European Championships”. Following Oettinger, Mayor Schuster described table tennis as a “wonderful” and “exciting” sport, which can be exercised a lifetime.

A talented young singer performs „Fight to win“

Under the applause of the spectators, each of the 47 participating associations was presented with the national flag on the video screen. 14-year-old Catharina Heller, who performed the song “Fight to Win” obtained approval from the spectators, too. At the age of 9, she had already entered the “Young Opera” Stuttgart, a choir for extraordinary talented singers. Even though she already performed on stage in front of 5 000 opera spectators, she had never performed during a big sports event. “The excitement was big at the beginning, but everything went well”, she said. Her next performance on the last day of the championships doesn’t concern her anymore: “Now I am used to it”, she added.

Thomas Weikert expressed his pleasant anticipation in his speech: “I am looking forward to eight days of world class table tennis.” Championships of “integration and fairness” should promote the fascinating sport. He reminded the audience of the Finals in 1992, when German player Jörg Rosskopf won against Belgian player Jean-Michael Saive. Both return to Stuttgart 17 years later: Rosskopf as a coach in the German squad, Saive as an experienced player in the Belgian team. Before ETTU-President Stefano Bosi declared the championships open, he highlighted the contribution of table tennis in these days to a strong and organized united Europe.

Vladimir Samsonov: „Of course I’d like to play the finals"

On Saturday the first training sessions started at 10 in the morning in the Porsche-Arena and Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle. According to the training schedule the national teams from Germany, Austria and Belarus were the first ones of the day who could practice for the LIEBHERR European Table-Tennis Championships starting on Sunday.

One of the top seeds, Belorussian player Vladimir Samsonov, practiced with his team partner Evgueni Chtchetinine. While he finished the training, Timo Boll entered the playing area. They showed their good relationship, talking for a few minutes. Samsonov does not want to exclude that Boll will be his opponent in the single final again this time like previous year in Saint Petersburg. “Of course I’d like to play the finals. Timo is the top favorite.”

The Table.

The upper surface of the table, known as the playing surface, shall be rectangular, 2.74 m long and 1.525 m wide, and shall lie in a horizontal plane 76 cm above the floor.

The playing surface shall be uniformly dark colored and matt, but with a white side line, 2 cm wide, along each 2.74 m edge and a white end line, 2 cm wide, along each 1.525 m edge.

The playing surface may be of any material and shall yield a uniform bounce of about 23 cm when a standard ball is dropped on to it from a height of 30 cm.

For doubles, each court shall be devided into 2 equal half-courts by a white centre line, 3 mm wide, running parallel with the side lines; the centre line shall be regarded as part of each right half-court.

The Ball.

The ball shall be spherical, with a diameter of 40 mm.
The ball shall weigh 2.7 g.
The ball shall be made of celluloid or similar plastics material and shall be white or orange, and matt.

The Service

Service shall start with the ball resting freely on the open palm of the server's stationary free hand (if the ball accidently rolls off the server`s hand before he starts to throw it his opponent does not score a point because the ball wasn`t in play)

The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 16cm (6.3 inches) after leaving the palm of the free hand and then falls without touching anything before being struck.
As the ball is falling the server shall strike it so that it touches first his court and then, after passing over or around the net assembly, touches directly the receiver's court; in doubles, the ball shall touch successively the right half court of server and receiver.

From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden from the receiver by the server or his doubles partner and by anything they wear or carry.

As soon as the ball has been projected, the server’s free arm shall be removed from the space between the ball and the net. Note: The space between the ball and the net is defined by the ball, the net and its indefinite upward extension.
It is the responsibility of the player to serve so that the umpire or the assistant umpire can see that he complies with the requirements for a good service.
If the umpire is doubtful of the legality of a service he may, on the first occasion in a match, declare a let and warn the server.
Any subsequent service of doubtful legality of that player or his doubles partner will result in a point to the receiver.
Whenever there is a clear failure to comply with the requirements for a good service, no warning shall be given and the receiver shall score a point.
Exceptionally, the umpire may relax the requirements for a good service where he is satisfied that compliance is prevented by physical disability.

Winners of the respective Men’s and Women’s Singles titles at the Volkswagen Pro Grand Finals in Macao in December 2008, emerged as the champions at the English Open in Sheffield on Sunday 1st November 2009.

China’s Ma Long won the Men’s Singles crown, whilst compatriot Guo Yan captured the counterpart female event.

Ma Long, seeded no.2, accounted for national team colleagues to clinch the title.

He overcame Xu Xin, seeded no.18, in the semi-finals and Ma Lin, seeded no.3, in the final; the latter having ended the brave run of Japan’s Seiya Kishikawa, seeded no.29, at the penultimate stage.

Similarly, Guo Yan, seeded no.2, faced a national team colleague in the final; she confronted 18 year old Liu Shiwen, the no.1 seed, emerging successful in five games to clinch gold.

At the semi-final stage Guo Yan beat Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah, seeded no.4, in the semi-finals; whilst Liu Shiwen defeated Singapore’s Feng Tianwei, seeded no.3.

Two titles for China but there was not to be a full house.

Ma Long partnered Wang Liqin to win the Men’s Doubles title beating Japan’s Seya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani in the final but for Chang Chenchen and Guo Yan it was not to be; they had to settle for silver.

At the final hurdle they were beaten by Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah and Park Mi Young.

Точно так же Guo Yan, отобранный номер 2, стоял перед коллегой национальной сборной в финале; она противостояла 18-летнему Liu Shiwen, номер 1 семени, появляясь успешный в пяти играх, чтобы заключить золото.

На стадии полуфинала Guo Yan бьют Кима Кюнга Кореи Ах, отобранный номер 4, в полуфиналах; пока Лиу Шивен побеждал Feng Сингапура Tianwei, отбирал номер 3.

Два названия для Китая, но не должны были быть аншлагом.

Мама Долго была партнером, Wang Liqin, чтобы выиграть Мужское Удваивает название, бьющее Сея Кишикоу Японии и Юна Мизутэни в финале, но для Чэнга Ченкэна и Гуо Яна, которым это не должно было быть; они должны были согласиться на серебро.

1) Программа «Самый умный», которой 8 марта исполняется 7 лет, показала какое количество юных талантов существует в нашей стране.
Но показала и то, насколько система не готова их принять. Максимум чего они могут добиться – это поступления в лучшие ВУЗы страны в ручном режиме. То есть то, что для них может сделать проект «Самый умный».

Вот пример из жизни – Савелий Косенко.
Он попал в Книгу рекордов Гиннесса. Вы знаете о нем? Скорее всего, нет. В десять лет Савелий написал учебник по физике и окончил школу. В 11 поступил в Бауманку, учась при этом сразу на двух факультетах. В 16 лет лет он окончил университет и продолжил учебу в США. Насколько высоки шансы, что Савелий вернется в Россию? А его таланты нам бы очень помогли.

У России есть все предпосылки к тому, чтобы стать страной возможностей.
Ведь именно здесь сегодня существует запрос на идеи, решения, инновации. Так давайте сделаем нашу страну более комфортной для каждого из нас, более технологичной, более удобной для развития каждого человека. Давайте сделаем жизнь лучше здесь и сейчас. Вопрос в том – как это сделать?

Мы понимаем, что многое в системе социального устройства России не работает, многое нужно изменить.
Но эти проблемы надо решать не только на уровне государства, но и на уровне граждан. Мы сами должны принять в этом участие.

Мы часто говорим «один в поле не воин».
Что я могу сделать в одиночку? – этот вопрос задает себе каждый. Именно поэтому наша страна является самой неуверенной в успехе. По опросам, три четверти соотечественников считают, что большинство жителей России не смогут прожить без опеки государства.
