A lot of you have been sending me questions - some of them the same questions - and I try to answer as many as I can, but as you know, I'm in training so sometimes its hard. I thought I'd post some of the questions and my answers here too.
What are some training tips on how to run an affective 200 meters from start to finish?
The key to running a great 200m is to know that there is no where to rest in the entire race. This is a sprint. You want to focus on the first 80m like it is the 100m. You always want to be leading coming off the curve, then you reposition yourself making sure you are in correct form. On the straight away you want to power away and try and make another move on the last 50m.
How was that experience of winning three gold medals and how do you feel you did overall?
Winning 3 medals at worlds was an amazing thing and it really gave me a sense of accomplishment. I had a tough year with illness and injury the pervious year so to set goals, work hard and have success was special for me.
Where did u learn to run so fast like that, who inspired you?
When I was younger I always tried to keep up with my brother. I loved to do whatever he was doing so when he went out for track so did I. So my family inspires me through their work ethic. I have always been taught to work hard at everything I do.
Apart from being a great athlete what else you into? Like what music, n movies you like?
I love to do all the normal things when I'm not training or in school. I love to shop. I listen to rap, r&b and gospel. I love all kinds of movies with my favorites being Clueless and Zoolander, comedies are my favorite :)
Are you still going to USC and do you have any plans to try and break the record in the 200m?
Yes, I still go to USC and I graduate this December. I would love to break the 200m record and after this year it is a closer step. That is a serious record though so I'm taking one step at a time and the next step is the Olympics!
When will you be running next on TV so we can set it to record if we are not home?
Well this season has just ended, so there will be lots of meets next year to watch along with the Olympic Trials. You can always check the TV schedule on www.usatf.org when it gets closer.
Interview with Christian Athlete Allyson Felix Do you attend church? Yes, I attend church every Sunday that I am at home. When I travel I take sermons from various pastors to listen to while I'm on the road.
Do you read the Bible regularly? Yes, I go through different Bible studies so that I am constantly challenging myself to grow in my relationship with God.
Do you have a life verse from the Bible? I have a lot of different verses that inspire my life. Philippians 1:21 is very special to me because it helps to keep my life centered. In every situation in my life I want to be able to say, "For me to live is Christ ... and nothing else, and to die is gain." It really keeps life in perspective for me and encourages me to make sure my priorities are straight.
How does your faith influence you as an athletic competitor? My faith inspires me so much. It is the very reason that I run. I feel that my running is completely a gift from God and it is my responsibility to use it to glorify him. My faith also helps me not be consumed with winning, but to see the big picture and what life is really all about.
Do you ever face difficult challenges because of your stand for Christ? I have not experienced any great persecution for my faith. Some people find it hard to understand, but I have been very blessed that I haven't encountered great challenges so far.
Do you have a favorite Christian author? I really enjoy Cynthia Heald's books. I have done a number of her Bible studies and read her books and I find them very practical and beneficial.
Do you have a favorite Christian music artist? I have a lot of Christian artists that I enjoy listening to. Some of my favorites are Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary and Donnie McClurkin. Their music is so "relatable" and inspiring.
Who would you name as a personal hero of the faith? Without a doubt, my parents. They are just amazing individuals. I could not ask for better role models in my life. I admire them so much because they are real people yet they live such godly lives. They have countless responsibilities and hectic schedules, but they know what their life is all about, and they have a passion for sharing their faith and making a difference in our community.
What is the most important life-lesson you have learned? The most important lesson that I have learned is to trust God in every circumstance. Lots of times we go through different trials and following God's plan seems like it doesn't make any sense at all. God is always in control and he will never leave us. We can depend on him. So I have learned that I never know best and that I should always trust in God.
Is there any other message you would like to say to readers? I would just like to ask for your prayers as I train for Beijing. It would mean so much if you could pray that I am able to share my faith with the world and affect as many people as possible.
Dont burn out Allyson Felix, says Felix Sanchez 2003, 19 May “Don’t burn out Allyson Felix,” says Felix Sanchez
Felix Sanchez: Hello everybody,
I think the breakthrough of Allyson Felix and all the other teenagers is very interesting. On the other hand I am still convinced that we athletes are like cars. You can only drive us so fast so long. I believe everyone has his 3, 4 or even maybe 5 years at the very top. Everyone has his window. The question is what window do you want to have?
In the US they have the youth system, the college system and after that there is the international scene. If you peak too early you are going to miss out on your window!
It’s like this South African 400m Hurdler (editor: Louis van Zyl, World junior champion born in 1985). He’s done great things already. But when one matures faster than people his own age, realistically it is very hard for them to progress again at a later stage in their career.
It is believed that the full maturity stage is reached at 22, 23 years of age. If an athlete has his best years when he’s 19 or 20 you can’t expect him to come back again when he’s 25 or 26.
Allyson Felix is on pace to run much faster than Flo Jo’s world records if she continues progressing they way she has been. But that again is very unlikely. I really do hope that the people surrounding her and people at USATF will preserve her. She has a great talent, it would be a pity to burn her out so soon.
I know what she must feel like. I remember when I was younger and I wanted to run at each and every meet and in all the races in order to help my team. I always wanted to run all the events but today I understand how fortunate I have been to always have people around me who would hold me back, who would preserve me.
They had seen talent in me and they wanted me to succeed in my career. They put me in the bigger picture and raced me sparingly and today, I constantly thank them for that.
